THE PAST: Haney turned professional at 17 in Mexico. This super talent has scored wins over Mason Menard (RTD 9), Juan Carlos Burgos (UD 10) and Antonio Moran (KO 7). After being upgraded to full WBC titleholder, following his dominant win over Zaur Abdullaev (RTD 4), he defended his title, notably beating former three-division titlist Jorge Linares (UD 12) and former 130-pound titlist Joseph Diaz Jr. (UD 12). The 25-year-old scored a dominant win over Ring champion and IBF/WBA/WBO titleholder George Kambosos Jr. (UD 12) to become undisputed champion and repeated the win in a rematch. Haney then edged past Vasiliy Lomachenko (UD 12) in controversial fashion. That lead to him heading to junior welterweight where he dominated Regis Prograis (UD 12) to claim the WBC title. He lost to an overweight Ryan Garcia but saw the result amended to a no-contest when Garcia tested positive for Ostarine.

imageFirst established in 1979 by the WBC with a limit of 190 lbs to fit smaller heavyweight fighters who couldn’t compete with the growing size of the other boxers in the division. The first sanctioned cruiserweight champion fight was between Mate Parlov and Marvin Camel for the new WBC Cruiserweight belt. However, with the first match ending in a draw, it was the rematch in which Camel emerged victorious to become the very first cruiserweight world champ.

Gervonta Davis is a rare case of someone who currently holds belts in two different weight classes in the WBA Super World Super Featherweight title and the WBA Regular Lightweight title. His first world championship in came in January 2017 when he won the IBF Super Featherweight title by beating the previously undefeated Jose Pedraza. After a successful title defense against Liam Walsh, Davis was stripped of the title due to missing weight in his fight against Francisco Fonseca which he would also go on to win.

With a height of 5,47 ft, the young, ambitious boxer made his way to the boxing top and won five world titles. In 1931, he defeated Jackie ‘Kid’ Berg in the World Junior Welterweight Championship. He was, at that time, only the second boxer ever to win world titles in three different weight classes.

When the (amateur) International Boxing Association (AIBA) was founded in 1946 to govern amateur boxing, it metricated the weight class limits by rounding them to the nearest kilogram. Subsequent alterations as outlined in the boxing at the Summer Olympics article; these have introduced further discrepancies between amateur and professional class limits and names. The lower weight classes are to be adjusted in September 2010, to establish an absolute minimum weight for adult boxers.

Thanks for answering my question. Just to clarify is the Tri-tech a gloves that comes under the ‘all-around’ glove type that would be suitable for sparring and bag work? Also is there a difference between training gloves and sparring gloves? Sorry for asking so many questions, it’s just there’s a lot of stuff to take in. Thanks

The first significant step towards formalizing weight classes came in the late 19th century. The National Sporting Club of London, pivotal in shaping modern boxing rules, began categorizing fighters into classes by weight. This move aimed to ensure fairer, more competitive matches, laying the groundwork for the structure we see in boxing today.

Hello Johnny, I went for my first boxing training session and afterwards I had small bruises around both hands little fingers knuckle – nothing major…. just thought maybe the gloves were too big!? Unfortunately there not many women training at that gym so they only had one pair I could try. If possible could you recommend brand and size for me please? It’s only for training – I don’t think I’ll be doing sparring. I weigh 50 kg/110 lbs Thank you – would really appreciate if you could reply

Before moving up to conquer the heavyweight division, Evander Holyfield enjoyed a historic reign at cruiserweight and is considered by many the greatest ever fighter at 200 pounds. The main rival to that distinction is Oleksandr Usyk, who rallied to a famous undisputed success before emulating Holyfield again by winning a heavyweight title too.

Amateur weight classes also specify the minimum weight (which the same as the maximum weight of the next highest class). For safety reasons, fighters cannot fight at a higher weight. This also meant that even the heaviest weight class has a limit, albeit a lower bound. The lower limit for "heavyweight" was established in 1948 at 81 kg. When a new limit of 91+ kg was established in 1984, the name "heavyweight" was kept by the 81+ kg class, and the 91+ kg class was named "super heavyweight", a name not currently used in professional boxing rankings by weight division.image
