Larry Holmes, born in 1949 and famously known as the "Easton Assassin," stands as a legendary figure in the storied world of heavyweight boxing. Holmes’ reign as champion was marked by a unique blend of attributes that rendered him a dominant force in the heavyweight division. His powerful jab, often regarded as one of the best in the annals of the sport, enabled him to masterfully control the distance and dictate the tempo of his fights. His exceptional footwork further augmented his defensive prowess, rendering him an elusive target for his opponents.

imageWeight classes play a crucial role in ensuring fairness and safety in boxing. They ensure that bouts are contested between fighters of similar size and weight, making the outcomes rely more on skill, technique, and strategy rather than a sheer size advantage. This system minimizes the risk of mismatches where a significantly larger opponent could pose a safety risk to a smaller fighter.

Boxing’s 17 total weight classes span all the way from the diminutive 105-pound dynamos to heavyweight monsters that weigh in at 300 pounds. Interested in learning more? Keep reading as we break down each weight class as it stands today!

Random question: I am attending a MMA gym that teaches boxing and thats all i want to learn. The gym always has the same people, all of them are pro mma fighters and no true boxers. There are virtually no beginners, just the same 5-6 pro mma guys. The owner is still fighting and is in his late 30’s so he trains with them. I have to pay $300 for 15 sessions (basically train 15 times with him) in the hopes of gaining technique but all i have learned are new drills, no technique. Sparring isnt an issue but im not learning anything new. Basically im seen as another guy in the gym, more so a new kid. All i do is go in and hit the bag, there are no classes, and the supposed head boxing coach always looks at what i do and laughs. I ask him what am i doing wrong and he says sarcastically "nothing". Should i continue this little game or part ways and find a better gym? I have been on the prowl for a good gym that actually teaches for 2 years and no dice. Im in Georgia.

Away from the grind of boxing, Riakporhe is a passionate Crystal Palace fan and is loyally supported by the Selhurst Park faithful, while the 33-year-old Londoner has also established himself as a major player in the fashion world, modelling for leading brands and regularly popping up at exclusive events.

We’ll see what Canelo does against Berlanga on Saturday, but I can say without hesitation that prime Calzaghe would’ve taken care of business against the limited Puerto Rican banger within three rounds.

A multiple world champion in three weight divisions (super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight), Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez competed professionally from 1980 to 2005. He holds the record for the most successful defenses of world titles (27) and enjoyed an unbroken run of 87 wins before his first professional loss to Frankie Randall in 1994. His 1993 win over Greg Haugen at the Estadio Azteca set a new record for the largest attendance for a boxing match at the time; they fought before a 132,274-strong crowd.

You can spar anywhere but a boxing ring is best if you want to learn how to box according to the common rules and scenarios of boxing. Having a ring helps limit the area so neither you or your opponent can run out of range. It also forces you to develop long range as well as close range fighting skills. On a more psychological level, being in a ring forces you to confront your opponent without any option to quit.

That’s the target for Billam-Smith’s trainer Shane McGuigan, who said: "We’ve got to go for a unified world title. I would love that. I’d like that against Ramirez or Noel Mikaelian, the WBC champion, and then we’d look to box Opetaia early next summer. That’s the dream fight. Why wouldn’t we want to do that for an undisputed boxing game all boxers ?"

Roman boxing took place in both the sporting and gladiatorial arenas. Roman soldiers often boxed each other for sport and as training for hand-to-hand combat. The gladiatorial boxing contests usually ended only with the death of the losing boxer. With the rise of Christianity and the concurrent decline of the Roman Empire, pugilism as entertainment apparently ceased to exist for many centuries.
